Lab-grown diamonds have become a significant part of the jewelry industry, offering consumers an ethical and sustainable alternative to mined diamonds.

As the popularity of lab grown diamond jewellery grows, so does the importance of reliable grading systems to ensure transparency and trust in these gemstones.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), a leading authority in gemology, has recently updated its grading services for lab-grown diamonds. This article delves into the latest guidelines from GIA, industry trends, and how lab-grown diamond grading works.

How Are lab grown diamonds made?

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are created using advanced technological processes that replicate the natural conditions under which diamonds form in the Earth’s mantle.

There are two primary methods for producing lab-grown diamonds. High Pressure High Temperature or HPHT mimics the natural diamond formation process by subjecting carbon to high pressure and temperature, resulting in the crystallization of diamond.

Chemical Vapor Deposition or CVD involves introducing a carbon-rich gas into a chamber, where it breaks down and deposits carbon atoms onto a substrate, forming diamond crystals layer by layer. These diamonds possess the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, making them virtually indistinguishable without specialized equipment.

Lab Grown Diamond Grading as Per GIA

As of October 1, 2025, GIA has launched revised evaluation services for D-to-Z lab-grown diamonds to provide clearer and more consistent grading information for consumers and industry professionals.

GIA’s Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment offers an overall quality evaluation, classifying each diamond as either Premium or Standard. This includes evaluation of the 4Cs – Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight, along with a visual diagram of the diamond’s proportions and a laser inscription on the girdle stating “Laboratory-Grown” and the GIA quality assessment number.

For colored lab-grown diamonds, GIA provides a detailed report that includes a full 4Cs assessment, a plotted clarity diagram indicating inclusions, and information on growth type and post-growth treatment. A separate digital-only report focuses specifically on color characteristics, color distribution, and growth type.

The lab-grown diamond industry has seen significant developments in recent years, influencing grading practices and consumer perceptions. Advancements in CVD growth methods have led to a wider range of gem-quality stones being submitted for grading reports, now dominating the supply of lab-grown diamonds.

There has also been a noticeable increase in larger diamond submissions, reflecting a growing consumer preference for larger stones in lab-grown diamond jewellery. Furthermore, lab-grown diamonds show greater diversity in shapes compared to natural diamonds, likely due to efforts to maximize weight retention from the laboratory-created crystal shape.

Lab Grown Diamond Color & Clarity Grading

Lab-grown diamond grading follows a systematic approach, similar to natural diamonds, ensuring consistency and reliability. Cut grade evaluates how well a diamond’s facets interact with light, taking into account proportions, symmetry, and polish. Color grading assesses the presence of color, ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

Clarity grading evaluates internal or external imperfections, with categories from Flawless to Included. Carat weight measures the size of the diamond, where one carat equals 200 milligrams. A well-graded diamond exhibits brilliance, sparkle, and overall visual appeal, making it a valuable gemstone.

GIA certification provides assurance to consumers regarding the authenticity and quality of their diamonds. A GIA report offers transparency through detailed information on a diamond’s characteristics, builds trust by confirming evaluation by a reputable institution, and ensures value through accurate assessment.

Consumers purchasing lab-grown diamonds can rely on GIA certification to make informed choices when selecting a piece for everyday wear or special occasions.

The lab-grown diamond industry continues to evolve, with advancements in technology and grading practices enhancing consumer confidence. GIA’s updated grading services provide clear and consistent evaluations, helping buyers choose the right diamonds for their needs.

Understanding the grading system and the significance of certification is crucial in selecting high-quality lab grown diamonds that meet personal preferences, ethical considerations, and long-term value. With the growing popularity of lab grown diamond jewellery, GIA’s expertise ensures consumers can shop with confidence, knowing the quality of their gemstone has been accurately and transparently assessed.
