3 Tips to Keep Your House Baby-Proof and Safe

When there’s a little one crawling, toddling, or climbing around, your home suddenly becomes a minefield of potential dangers. Baby-proofing might feel a lot at first, but with a few simple steps, you can make your house a safer space for your curious explorer.

Here are 3 tips to help you baby-proof your home and keep your child safe.

Secure Furniture and Address Slippery Floors

Babies love to climb on anything they can reach—furniture, shelves, even TVs. At the same time, crawling and walking on smooth, tiled floors can pose risks as they’re prone to slips and falls. To keep your baby safe, focus on securing furniture and thinking about your floors.

You want to:

  • Anchor furniture: Use wall brackets or straps to secure dressers, bookshelves, and other tall furniture to prevent them from tipping over.
  • Secure your TV: Mount it to the wall or place it on a low, sturdy stand that’s out of reach.
  • Add non-slip rugs: Place non-slip mats or rugs in areas where tiles could cause your baby to lose their grip, especially in high-traffic zones like the living room or hallway.
  • Use socks with grips: If your baby wears socks, choose ones with rubber grips on the bottom to help them maintain traction.

Cover, Lock, and Block

Babies are naturally curious, which means they’ll explore anything and everything they can touch. Take these steps to cover, lock, and block potential hazards:

You want to:

  • Cover outlets: Plug all unused electrical outlets with outlet covers to keep tiny fingers safe.
  • Lock cabinets and drawers: Use childproof latches to keep cleaning supplies, knives, and other dangerous items out of reach.
  • Block off stairs and rooms: Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs and in doorways leading to unsafe areas like the kitchen or bathroom.
  • Clamp down cords: Secure curtain cords, blinds, or any loose wires to prevent strangulation risks.

Think Low: Baby’s Eye View

The best way to baby-proof your home is to get down to their level—literally! Crawling around on the floor can help you spot potential hazards that you might miss while standing.

You want to:

  • Check for choking hazards: Small items like coins, buttons, or toys with tiny parts can end up in your baby’s mouth. Keep these out of reach or off the floor entirely.
  • Pad sharp corners: Use corner protectors on coffee tables, counters, and other furniture to prevent bumps and bruises.
  • Be mindful of chemicals: Keep cleaning products, toiletries, and medications stored high and securely locked.

Seeing the world from your baby’s perspective will help you identify problem areas and fix them before they become an issue.

Start off on the right foot with these tips. Remember, baby-proofing isn’t about removing all the fun—just the dangers! So relax, take these precautions, and enjoy watching your baby explore their world safely.
