Trading platforms rarely fail at convenient moments. A frozen chart appears during a news release, a login error pops up five minutes before a planned entry, or an order bounces back with a cryptic message. Most of these problems have simple causes and quick fixes, provided you know where to look. A little preparation turns a panic into a thirty-second repair.
Anyone running mt4 for pc on a regular basis will meet the same handful of errors sooner or later. The most common is No Connection in the bottom right corner. Check your internet first, then open the login window and confirm the server name matches the one your broker gave you. If the problem continues, try a different server from the same broker, since a single overloaded machine can drop connections while others stay healthy.
Invalid Account is nearly always a typing issue or a server mismatch. Retype the password slowly, watch the caps lock key, and verify you chose the live server for a live account and the demo server for a demo account. Mixing them is a surprisingly frequent mistake. If the password truly fails, reset it through the broker client area rather than guessing repeatedly, since too many failed attempts can lock the account temporarily.
Order Errors and What They Mean
Invalid Stops means your stop loss or take profit sits too close to the current price. Brokers set a minimum distance called the stop level, and any order inside it is rejected. Widen the stops slightly and resend. Off Quotes or Requote appears when price moves between clicking and execution, which is common during fast markets. Enabling a small maximum deviation in the order window lets trades fill within a tolerance instead of failing.
Trade Context Busy happens when two programs try to send orders at once, usually a robot and a manual click. Wait a moment and retry, and consider whether two Expert Advisors are competing on the same account. Not Enough Money simply means required margin exceeds free margin. Reduce the lot size or close another position. Reading the message carefully usually points directly at the fix.
Missing History and Slow Charts
Gaps or blank sections on a chart often mean the history was never downloaded. Press F2 to open the History Center, select the symbol and timeframe, and download the data. Then refresh the chart. If charts feel sluggish, count how many are open and how many indicators each one carries. Cutting maximum bars in the options menu and closing unused windows noticeably speeds up a tired machine.
Slow execution is another complaint that deserves a methodical check. Run a ping test to the broker server and compare results at different times of day. If delays appear mainly during busy sessions, the problem may sit with the server rather than your machine. If the delay is constant, look at background downloads, cloud backups, or streaming video competing for bandwidth on the same connection.
Corrupted settings occasionally cause strange behavior, such as indicators refusing to load or charts reverting to defaults. Before reinstalling, back up the data folder, then rename the profiles and templates folders so the terminal rebuilds them fresh. If the problem disappears, restore files one at a time to find the offender. This method preserves custom tools while removing whatever caused the trouble.
The Journal tab records every connection attempt and error with timestamps, so open it first whenever something seems off. Copy the relevant lines when contacting broker support, because precise messages get faster answers than vague descriptions. Keep the platform updated through your broker, restart it weekly, and the majority of nuisances never appear at all.
